World Suicide Prevention Day

Sept. 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), a global event that shines the spotlight on suicide and its prevention.

Launched in 2003 and observed around the globe, the annual WSPD is a call to action for individuals, businesses and organizations in communities and countries to help prevent suicide, educate and offer support to those who need it most.

The suicide numbers are staggering. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), is estimated that more than 800, 000 people around the world commit suicide every year. It is the tenth leading cause of death in the world. Due to the stigma associated with suicide, the numbers are probably higher.

Suicide is devastating for those left behind. Some may feel intense grief, sadness, anger, guilt and self-blame and may be unable to share their feelings with others. Friends and family members may feel they are treated differently than those who have lost a loved one from another cause of death. While it may be difficult, being there in a supportive, non-judgmental way, is crucial for those trying to cope with such a tragic loss.

Please spread the word and join with others around the globe on World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is preventable.
