National Grandparents Day
Marian McQuade, a housewife from West Virginia, is often credited as being the founder of National Grandparents Day. After working with seniors for many years, she encouraged children and families to take the time to visit elderly relatives, shut-ins and seniors living in nursing homes. She also encouraged people to adopt a grandparent.
After getting the attention of several United States Senators, a resolution was introduced to make Grandparents Day a reality. In 1987, United StatesPresident Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.
Since then, folks have been celebrating and honoring the many achievements and contributions grandparents have made to our families and our country.
