World Farm Animals Day

October 2, 2014

Oct. 2 is World Farm Animals Day or World Day for Farmed Animals, an annual event that exposes and mourns the senseless suffering and inhumane treatment many farm animals endure on farms and in slaughterhouses around the world. More than 65 billion farm animals, cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys, are killed each year. 269 chickens are slaughtered in the United States each second or 23 million chickens each day.

The annual event is observed on Oct. 2 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, an outspoken advocate for animals. Launched in 1983 by the Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), animal lovers, volunteers and activists participate in wide variety of worldwide events and activities each year. People are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways.....
