National Quilting Day
Talk about a stitch! Whether you make them, admire them or cherish one’s handed down to you, chances are good you have one or two in your home. It’s National Quilting Day (NQD), an annual holiday that celebrates the tradition of quilt making. Celebrated each year on the third Saturday in March, NQD is sponsored by the National Quilting Association.
When the National Quilting Association began, the group had seven members. The group was formed to “create, stimulate, maintain and record an interest in all matters pertaining to the making, collecting and preserving of quilts.” Today, the organization provides certification, grant and scholarship programs and quilters from around the world are encouraged to participate.
Whether you quilt or simply appreciate the labor of love that goes into each and every handmade piece, quilts provide much more than warmth and comfort. Hung on the wall or draped over the bed, or displayed on a table, quilts are beautiful works of art. Happy National Quilting Day!
