March 25 is International Waffle Day. Not to be confused with National Waffle Day, another annual food holiday celebrated in August in honor of the patenting of the waffle iron, today’s food holiday celebrates the actual waffle itself.
Waffles have been enjoyed for centuries. It is believed the Greeks actually whipped up the flat cakes between two metal plates, called obleios, back in the 1300s. The annual event, also referred to as Vaffeldagen, actually began in Sweden and coincides with the Feast of Annunciation when Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she was pregnant. It also commemorates the beginning of spring.
Whether you prefer yours plain, smothered with all sorts of delicious toppings or drenched with syrup, today’s waffles are not just for breakfast or brunch anymore. They can be enjoyed anytime of the day or night.
