National Donut Day

A very tasty occasion is finally here and folks are more than ready to celebrate. Whether you spell it “donut” or “doughnut,” today is dedicated to the sweet treats Americans love to eat.  Today is National Donut Day in the U.S.A., an annual food holiday observed on the first Friday in June. This year’s delicious event takes place on June 5, 2015.

Launched by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938, National Donut Day was created to help raise funds during the Great Depression and to raise awareness about various Salvation Army programs. National Donut Day also honors the “Doughnut Lassies,” that very special group of very special gals who volunteered their time preparing and/or serving homemade donuts and coffee to soldiers on the front line during World War I. And believe it or not, those donuts were actually made in steel helmets.

Each year, businesses and restaurants serve up free or nearly-free donuts in honor of the occasion. Now you can enjoy this fabulous food holiday without forking out a lot of "dough." Donuts are all you “knead” to jump start your day! Sweet!
