Constitution Day

On this day back in 1787, 39 delegates signed theUnited States Constitution at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. To mark that momentous occasion, Sept. 17 is Constitution Day.

While many believe Thomas Jefferson was one of the signers, he was actually in France at the time and did not sign the Constitution. Neither did John Adams. Several men who attended the convention, did not sign. At 81, Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer. With just over 4,000 words, the Constitution is the “oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world.”

While today's negative political climate is often filled with rhetoric, misinformation and fear-mongering, it is important to remember those 39 brave men who were committed to liberty, equality and justice for all.
