National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

If you’re looking for a tasty treat to eat, go grab your plate! April 2 is a day for kids of all ages. Besides World Autism Awareness Day and International Children’s Book Day, April 2 is also National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day.

The delicious combination of salty peanuts with sweet jelly sandwiched between a couple slices of bread, is pretty hard to resist. While the origins of this annual food holiday are unknown, today serves as the perfect excuse to whip up a good ole’ PB&J sandwich.  Bet you didn't know that the “average” child eats 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before graduating from high school. Now that’s a lot of sandwiches!

No matter how old or young you happen to be, folks have been gobbling up PB&Js for decades. Legend has it the sandwiches got their start during World War II. Part of the soldiers’ rations included peanut butter and jelly. Once they mixed the two together, the rest, as they say, is sandwich history.

If you are old enough to remember the popular Mr. Ed television series, did you ever wonder how Mr. Ed talked? Peanut butter did the trick!

If you’re tired of eating wimpy foods, munch on something that’ll stick to your ribs - and your mouth! In honor of National PB&J Day, why not whip up one of the following delicious recipes? And just to make sure the peanut butter doesn’t get stuck to the roof of your mouth, wash down that sandwich with a delicious PB&J cocktail!
