Memorial Day: What's Open & Closed?
After a long week at work, a highly anticipated holiday is finally here. A three-day weekend and unofficial kick-off to the summer season is here and Americans are more than ready to celebrate. It’s Memorial Day, an American holiday that honors the brave men and women who have died in service to our country. The federal holiday is observed each year on the last Monday in May. This year’s event takes place on May 30, 2016.
Each year, millions of Americans will celebrate Memorial Day by attending parades, concerts, memorial services, rallies, backyard barbecues and family get-togethers. While folks around the nation celebrate with friends, family and loved ones, some businesses, government offices and services around the nation will be closed in honor of occasion. Government Offices – Non-essential federal, state, county and city government offices will be closed. Federal and state courts will also be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Postal and Package Information – U.S. post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered or sent on Memorial Day. The United Parcel Service (UPS) will also observe the Memorial Day holiday although UPS Express Critical will be available. FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx SmartPost will also observe Memorial Day.
Stock Markets - If you are planning on adding to your portfolio, Monday may not be your lucky day. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ Stock Market will be closed in observance of the holiday.
Schools and Banks - Many banks across the nation will be closed. Schools and colleges will also be closed.
Businesses and Services – It’s business as usual for many businesses, malls, stores and supermarkets across the nation. Some may even be offering special Memorial Day steals-and-deals in honor of the occasion. Depending on where you live, transportation service and garbage pickup may be impacted for the holiday.
