Labor Day 2016: What's Open & Closed on Labor Day?

It’s official. A long-awaited holiday is finally here and Americans are more than ready to celebrate! It's Labor Day in the U.S.A., an annual event that not only celebrates the unofficial end of another busy summer season, but also celebrates the American worker.

Observed each year on the first Monday in September, this year’s federal holiday is observed today,Sept. 5, 2016.

Whether you plan on attending a colorful parade, relaxing by the beach or enjoying a delicious backyard barbecue, you may be wondering what businesses and offices are open or closed today? While most people have the day off, one in five Americans will be working on Labor Day this year.

Mail - Post Offices are closed on Labor Day. In observance of the Labor Day holiday, no mail will be delivered.

Banks - Most major banks will be closed today in honor of the holiday. According to Go Banking Rates, the Bank of America, Capital One, Chase Bank, Citibank, KeyBank, M&T Bank, TD Bank and Wells Fargo will be closed however many ATMs and online banking alternatives will be available.

Governmental Offices - Public schools, libraries, local governmental offices, state offices, county offices, courts and state motor vehicle agencies will be closed. The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ stock markets will also be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Stores - Some major retailers are open today, some are not. Most supermarkets and convenience stores are also open today. Please check online or call your nearest retailer prior to heading out.

Restaurants - Many restaurants and bars across America will be open on Labor Day. Please call or check online for specific hours.
