Black Cat Appreciation Day: Black kitties make ‘purrfect’ pets

August 17, 2017

Have you heard the latest “mews?”  Whether you are an avid animal lover, feline fan or crazy cat lady, this particular "howliday" may be right up your alley!   A fabulous feline-inspired occasion is here and folks around the nation are ready to celebrate!  Aug. 17 is Black Cat Appreciation Day, an annual holiday that celebrates black felines in all their magnificent glory.

Unfortunately, many animal shelters are inundated with unwanted, unloved, neglected and abused animals. Sadly, black cats and dogs have the lowest adoption rate and highest euthanasia rate simply because of the color of their fur. Black cats are often falsely associated with bad luck and superstition.

Wayne Morris created the annual event in an effort to raise awareness about the plight of black cats and to encourage folks to adopt these often maligned and misunderstood animals. In an online interview, Morris said he selected Aug. 17 to "honor my sister’s passing and love of black cats." Morris said that even today, ignorance and superstitions still haunt black cats because of the color of their fur.   He wants us to remember - all cats are the same – they all need our love.  And with our help, support and awareness, we can make a difference for the millions of pets who are patient waiting for their "furever" homes.

If you have been thinking about opening your heart and your home to an animal in need, please consider adopting a black kitty from your local shelter.   Some shelters may be offering special events and deals in honor of Black Cat Appreciation Day.  Don’t walk by a black animal.  Give him or her the once-and-furever home he or she so deserves – before it’s too late.  And remember – adopt, don’t shop.  Black really is beautiful!
