Oct. 30 is National Candy Corn Day, an annual food holiday that celebrates the yellow, orange and white treats Americans love to eat! Sweet!
While the origins of the annual holiday are unknown, Wunderlee Candy Company employee, George Renninger, “invented” the colorful candy that resembles actual corn kernels back in the 1880s and folks have been enjoying candy corn ever since. Originally made by hand, the first tri-colored candy that looks like kernels of corn, had a yellow base, orange middle and a white tip. Made from the bottom up, more than 9 billion candy corn pieces, or more than 35 million pounds, are produced every year, according to the National Confectioners Association.
Although candy corn can be enjoyed all year ‘round, it’s particularly popular during the Halloween holiday season. While the traditional candy is still available today, candy corn comes in different colors and flavors, depending on the season. For example, the triangle-shaped sweet treat is available in pretty red, green and white-colored kernels during the Christmas holiday season while red, pink and white kernels are made for Valentine’s Day. Bunny corn, which includes pretty pastel colors, is available during the Easter holiday.
