Besides National Meteor Day and Social Media Day, June 30 is also National Ice Cream Soda Day. After all, what could be better than sippin' on a refreshing glass of Ice cream soda on a sizzlin' hot summer day?
Ice cream sodas contain a scoop or two of ice cream, flavored syrup and a carbonated beverage. Robert M. Green invented ice cream sodas back in 1874 during a celebration in Philadelphia. He combined soda water, vanilla ice cream with 16 different flavored syrups. And needless to say, his new creation was a great big hit!
Before computers and mobile devices, people hung out at the local soda fountains. Not only were soda fountains great for socializing with friends, teens would bring their dates to soda fountains too. If you’ve ever seen the movie "Pleasantville" or watched Happy Days on TV, you get the picture.
