You say ‘Pierogy,’ they say ‘Pierogi." Regardless how you spell it, October 8 is National Pierogy Day, a day dedicated to the delightful dumplings filled with all sorts of deliciousness.
These fabulous Polish treats can be baked, fried, boiled, grilled, microwaved or cooked in a crock-pot. The pasta shells are stuffed with all sorts of fillings including meat, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cheese, veggies, fruit or a delightful combination of fillings. Not only are pierogies delicious to eat and affordable to make, many are low in fat, too.
Mrs. T’s Pierogies
Americans have been enjoying pierogies since the early 1900s. Just how popular are they? Last year alone, Americans ate 31 million pounds of them, according to pierogi-maker Mrs. T’s. Mary Twardzik, Mrs. T., would sit at her kitchen table with friends and make pierogies for church fundraisers. After watching his mom make pierogies, Mrs. T’s son, Ted Twardzik, took his mom’s original recipe and founded the Mrs. T’s Pierogies company in 1952. Today, Mrs. T’s manufactures more than 11 million pierogies in 14 different flavors each week.
