Sunscreen Day: Wear Protection!

With the beginning of the summer season unofficially under way, it’s time to wear protection!Sunscreen, that is! mmMay 27 is Sunscreen Day or Sun Screen Day, an annual “holiday” that raises awareness about the importance of wearing sunscreen.

As more and more people head outside to enjoy the warm and sunny weather, Sunscreen Day serves as an important reminder that too much sun can lead to skin cancer, premature wrinkles and damage to the eyes. Did you know the most common type of cancer in the United States is skin cancer, which is preventable? One American will die about every hour from malignant melanoma.

Sunscreen can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays when applied properly. Besides wearing sunscreen, there are some other simple steps you can take to keep you and your family safe from the harmful effects of the sun.

Protect Yourself

  • The sun’s UV rays are the strongest between the hours of 10:00 and 4:00 P.M. Try to stay out of the sun during those times.

  • Wear sun-protective clothing that covers exposed areas of the body.

  • Wear a hat and sunglasses.

  • Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin. Reapply every two hours and after sweating, swimming and/or rigorous activity.

  • Many people believe you can’t get a sunburn on cloudy or hazy days. Some of the worst sunburns occur on those types of days!

  • Find out what the UV Index will be in your location before you head outside.

  • Skin Cancer Facts For Your State - Get the facts.

Protecting yourself from the harmful rays of the sun will not only prevent early aging and damage to your eyes, but may just save your life too. Pass it on!
